We expanded The Improved Cookstove Project to neighbouring country Uganda. Our destination was Social Innovation Academy (SINA) which is situated in Mpigi District. We camped in Uganda from 19th June to 26th June 2017.
40 artisans were empowered with skills on how to construct improved cookstove so as to generate income from the venture as well as reduce indoor air pollution and deforestation.A third of the participants were women. The training attracted participants from Nakivale Refugee Camp and the nationalities trained were from Uganda,Ethiopia and Democratic Republic of Congo.
After the training, the participants will go back to their respective countries to go and train other trainers. The artisans also formed the pilot association “Improved Cookstove Association of Uganda” where the participants will receive additional entrepreneurial training. We work closely with GIZ Energy Development Programme Kenya.Monitoring and Evaluation will continually be provided. The artisans will charge clients labor fee of between USD 30-USD 50 per Cookstove which is exclusive of construction materials. The amount will also depend on the price the Association will deem fit.
The Improved Cookstove Project has been implemented in two counties in Kenya namely Taita Taveta County and Machakos Counties which has seen 82 jobs created in the two counties and more than 2000 jikos constructed so far.
