2018 Tana Forum Call for Regional Journalists Deadline:27th March 2018

With the aim of playing a crucial role in bringing about sustainable peace and contributing to the implementation of the African Union Tripoli Declaration of August 2009, the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) at Addis Ababa University convenes an annual forum on security called the Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, or Tana Forum in short. This initiative is a response to the declaration’s appeal for “African-centred solutions”, and its call for the treatment of peace and security as a collective “intellectual challenge”.
The overall objective of the Tana Forum is to facilitate a platform where African peace and security issues are discussed and followed up by African decision-makers and peace and security stakeholder groups in an open and informal setting. The 2018 edition of the Forum will be convened on 21-22 April 2018 on the theme “Ownership of Africa’s Peace and Security Provision: Financing and Reforming the African Union”. This theme recognizes that the principle of ownership in the field of peace and security faces many difficulties as local stakeholders might lack sufficient will or capacity for peace-building and state-building. Understanding ownership helps to strategically examine the roles and functions of external actors in the goals of peace-building and state-building. In a rapidly changing global and African policy environment, there is an obvious need for more powerful and effective AU institutions with the capacity to assume strong ownership on continental and global peace and security matters. The Tana Forum Secretariat has 6 SLOTS to be granted competitively to journalists based in Africa to attend the Forum and provide coverage.

SELECTION

The criteria for selection include:

1. Must be a journalist from any of the African Union Member States
2. Must be in possession of a valid passport and in good health condition to travel to and from Ethiopia between 20-23 April 2018 (journalists with disabilities are equally encouraged to apply).
3. Must have demonstrated interest and experience in covering regional events and high-level forums as evidenced by samples of work.

Selection will take place in the week of 28-29 March 2018. The costs of travel, accommodation and meals will be covered by the Tana Forum Secretariat.

For those who do not get selected, you will be invited to take part in the Tana Forum Media Connect Community where you can access a range of resources including daily summaries, press releases, photographs, audio and video clips of the Tana Forum as well as speeches and relevant presentations shared during the forum.

Video Project for Young Family Planning/Reproductive Health Advocates: Apply Now!

The Population Reference Bureau is seeking applications for a video training series that will boost the skills and success of reproductive health youth advocates in using online platforms to raise awareness.

This training – to take place May-September 2018 – will guide young reproductive health advocates through production of short videos for online media to raise awareness of important health topics in their communities. Training will include a video production guide, five video conference calls that will teach concept development, production, editing, and messaging, and some individual coaching and support. You will come away with lasting skills to improve your work.

Applicants must be between the ages of 18-35, have experience with reproductive health advocacy, and must have existing social media accounts.

The Africa of my Dreams Writing Contest

What does the Africa of your dreams look like? What hopes and dreams do you have? How do you envision the future?

As an African organization serving Africans, the African Development Bank’s dream is to build today a better future for Africa tomorrow. Our goal is to unlock the potential of Africa’s youth. We envision a continent that is dynamic, prosperous and led by the visionary leadership of its largest demographic asset – the youth. 

The Bank recognizes the energy, creativity and innovative thinking that many of our youth bring to the table.

Ahead of our Annual Meetings, that will be held on the theme “Accelerating Africa’s Industrialization”, in Busan, Korea, in May 2018, we have launched a writing competition for young Africans aged 20-29.

All you have to do is write an article (no longer than 1,000 words) on the Africa of your dreams, by March 26. Entries can be in English or French, and must be an unpublished journalistic piece, in the media category, or an unpublished essay or creative writing piece, in the general category, related to the contest’s theme, “Accelerating Africa’s Industrialization” and based on any of the following sub-themes:

• Smart Cities and Urban Development
• The Internet of Things
• Agriculture as a Business
• 4^th Industrial Revolution
• ICTs and the video game industry
• Inclusive and sustainable industrial development
• Integrating Africa through Entertainment
• Blockchain and cryptocurrency
• The future of entrepreneurship
• Health innovation

Four winners will receive an all-expense paid trip to attend the Korea event. Winners in each category will also take home a laptop computer, and runners-up will get tablets.

Participants must meet ALL of the below requirements:

• Must be 20 years of age, and legally allowed to travel internationally.
• Must hold a valid passport, or be able to obtain one prior to attending the Annual Meetings.
• Must be a citizen of one of the 54 African countries.
• Must not be older than 29 years old as of May 31, 2018 to enter the Contest;
• Entries must be submitted in English or French (the African Development Bank’s official languages).

o  Young Media Practitioners: Must submit an unpublished piece no longer than 1,000 words, related to the contest’s theme.

o  Young Contestants: Must submit an essay, article or creative writing piece, no longer than 1,000 words, related to the contest’s theme.

In addition to their submitted pieces, participants will be required to submit a proof of identity – passport, birth certificate or national icard.

UNESCO Mid-Term Review Youth Survey

UNESCO, in cooperation with an external evaluation team from ICON-INSTITUTE, has recently launched the mid-term review of the UNESCO Operational Strategy on Youth 2014-2021 (OSY).

To develop a deeper insight regarding the relevance, effectiveness and impact of the OSY, as well as provide recommendations for its future operationalization, this review is designed to gather the views of a broad range of stakeholders. As a beneficiary, participant, and /or contributor to UNESCO-led activities relating to youth, your experience is of high value for the review.

Please take only 15 minutes of your time and give us your feedback and opinion through this survey, by 25 March 2018 at the latest.

The Obama Foundation Leaders Africa Program will inspire, empower, and connect emerging leaders from across Africa, through a core set of shared values and leadership skills, to help build a new generation of active African citizens and positive role models prepared to create tangible solutions to the challenges in their communities, countries, and continent.

The Obama Foundation seeks to identify a group of emerging African leaders from all sectors — government, civil society, and the private sector — who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the common good. The objective of the program is to build a growing network of innovative and ethical changemakers, who seek to drive positive change in their communities. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated potential for impact, a clear commitment to integrity, and a commitment to stay engaged with the Obama Foundation throughout the year and beyond.  We are interested in talented individuals who are on the right trajectory at earlier stages of their journey, as well as those who have already attained success.

The inaugural class of the Leaders Africa Program will convene in Johannesburg, South Africa from July 14 through July 18, 2018, as well as participate in robust online activities throughout the year. The Obama Foundation will cover costs related to economy class travel, lodging, and meals throughout the July 14-18 portion of the program.

Call for CVs: Nominations of Youth Delegates to Youth 20 Summit 2018

The Y20 Summit 2018 will take place in the province of Cordoba, Argentina from August 13th-19th  2018. The Summit will address the theme “Education for Development” and will focus on three central pillars: sustainability, gender equality and fairness. Four task forces will be established in order to allow participants to address the following topics:

• Skills for the 21st century: education for employment, innovative educational methodologies, reducing gender and inequality gaps, teaching skills and citizenship;
• The future of work: adapt the current labor paradigm, policies for retraining and re-skilling workforce, new technologies, welfare policies and labour policies;
• Entrepreneurship and self-employment: social entrepreneurship, innovation and welfare effects, youth unemployment, infrastructure to foster local consumption and collaboration,  digital economy;
• Sustainable development and circular economy: strong, sustainable and inclusive development, circular and blue economy, sustainable consumption and resource efficiency.

Delegates are expected to participate in pre-online discussions, as well as take part in the 2018 Summit in August. During the Summit, all delegations and individuals with proven experience and knowledge on the topics will produce a high quality position paper with policy suggestions that represent the vision and needs of young people across the G20 countries.

Against this backdrop, the organisers of Y20 Summit have asked the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency to select two (2) Youth delegates as representants. One delegate with an academic background and one delegate with the ability to implement projects and initiatives in their own country will be selected to attend the Summit. Applicants are kindly informed to note that their CVs will be submitted to the Senegal Presidency (Currently Chairing the NEPAD Heads of States sub-committee) and they have the final say on the selection of delegates.

Below are the general selection criteria for both delegates and special requirements for each profile.

Both applicants must be between:

1. The Ages of 18 and 30;
2. Possess deep knowledge on, at least, one of the task force topics;
3. Have a Valid passport;
4. Fluent English;
5. Commitment to work 10hs a month on follow up actions of Y20 for 12 month;
6. Non-government employee;
7. Have Capacity and understanding of global problems with a multicultural perspective.

Academic Delegate:

1. University studies: Bachelor and Master degree in, at least, one of the task forces topics;
2. Have at least two (2) years of professional experience in private sector, NGOs or public administration, as consultant or in the implementation of projects or policies related to, at least, one task force;
3. Proved interest in educational challenges and topics.

Social Leader Delegate

1. Have at least four (4) years of professional experience in private sector, NGOs or public administration in the implementation of projects and policies related to, at least, one task force. Volunteering, full time and part-time jobs count as professional experience;
2. Be currently an active participant of a Youth Platform, NGO or social enterprise which develop and execute projects in territory related to, at least, one task force;
3. Show commitment and ability to develop high impact projects in their own territories;
4. Demonstrated leadership, commitment to their organization’s or business’s success, positive attitude, initiative and perseverance;
5. Proved interest in educational challenges and topics.

Climate Tracker are awarding two fully funded fellowships for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Intersession in May in Germany:

In 2018, the most prominent scientific body on climate change issues, the IPCC, will release the Special Report on 1.5° (SR1.5). It is also the year of the Talanoa Dialogue, during which countries have to increase their ambition on fighting climate change.

We need a transition to 100% renewable energy and foster natural climate solutions, like reforestation and forest protection. The Internet Society is inviting applications for its Fellowship to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The Fellowship programme allows technologists, engineers and researchers from emerging and developing economies to attend an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) meeting.

 The IETF is the Internet’s premier standards-making body, responsible for the development of protocols used in IP-based networks. IETF participants represent an international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers involved in the technical operation of the Internet and the continuing evolution of Internet architecture.

Fellowships will be awarded through a competitive application process. The current selection round is for the following:

The President of the General Assembly is convening a two-day high-level meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, 24-25 April 2018 at UN Headquarters in New York with the aim to discuss ways to support peace in practice. At the request of the Office of the President of the General Assembly (OPGA), UN-NGLS and the UN Peacebuilding Support Office are facilitating a process to identify 8 stakeholder respondents for the interactive dialogues, and for stakeholders to apply to attend this event as observers.
