Young People’s Sexual and Reproductive Health

DID YOU KNOW
▶▶ More than 40 per cent of the world’s population is
under the age of 25, which represents the largest
generation of young people the world has ever seen.
▶▶ Young people account for almost 50 per cent of new
HIV infections.
▶▶ In sub-Saharan Africa, young women from 15 to 24
years old are twice as likely as young men to be living
with HIV.
▶▶ Globally, only 34 per cent of young people can
demonstrate accurate knowledge about HIV
prevention and transmission.
▶▶ Worldwide, more than 15 million girls from 15 to 19
years old give birth every year, with 19 per cent of
young women in developing countries becoming
pregnant before they turn 18.
▶▶ Adolescent girls and young women make up 40 per
cent of all unsafe abortions worldwide, and 2.5 million
unsafe abortions occur every year among this age
group.
▶▶ A significant proportion of adolescent pregnancies
result from rape, and most births take place in the
context of early marriage.
▶▶ An estimated one in three women and girls worldwide
report surviving physical and/or sexual abuse, most
often at the hands of an intimate partner, making
gender-based violence one of the most widespread
human rights violations.
▶▶ Pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of
death among adolescent girls between the ages of 15
and 19 in low-income countries.
Something needs to be done and we can prevent this through Comprehensive life-skilled Sexuality Education targeting adolescents and youth.#Violet Mbiti Foundation

Water Scarcity in Wamunyu Ward,Machakos County resolved

By Violet Mbiti

Click on the YouTube link below to have a preview of the project

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VQXqsFSxCY

I witnessed the perennial water shortage affecting the residents of Wamunyu Ward, Mwala Constituency, Machakos County . This is my rural home and I decided to take action in 2014. I approached the County Government of Machakos and made a funding pitch on why we need a dam constructed that will create jobs for youth via agribusiness as well as sale of water at subsidized prices that will benefit Wamunyu on Time CBO and residents . I therefore submitted a proposal and later i was summoned by community elders to share with them about this project. Unfortunately Politics interfered with the commencent of the project. We were greatly affected..I therefore applied to Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Political Leadership and Governance Program to learn where i was going wrong. With the knowledge attained i regained my strength and focus. I lobbied the County Government and utilized my basic advocacy efforts to revive the project. The dam will provide water for residents of Wamunyu Market, Kambiti, Mwasua and Mbaikini. There will be a treatment plant as well as pumping of water to the households. It was a pleasure visiting the site with Member County of Assembly Wamunyu Ward Hon Musyoka. When he was elected he ensured this is the first project he will embark on. Asante Mheshimiwa.. Masisya Dam is now on course
