MTN Venture Incubation Programme for founders building viable and scalable digital startups

The Venture Incubation Programme (VIP) in partnership with MTN GROUP is designed to provide a supportive ecosystem to help startups build viable and scalable innovation-driven companies.Startups have access to a range of resources including co-working space, practical learning clinics, mentors, weekly check-ins and staff advisors, and a community of peers who learn and grow together.

The VIP offers startups several key advantages. They’re located in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, where startups are on the doorstep of Africa’s fastest growing tech hub. They offer proof-of-concept (POC) collaboration opportunities with  industry partner MTN Group and a pool of early-stage investors.

MTN Group is looking for startups that are either building a sustainable Africa through digital solutions for health, education, agriculture, fintech, energy and IoT, or enabling businesses through digital solutions for religion, sport, news and e-commerce.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
+ Digital startup with focus on either Fintech, HealthTech, EdTech, AgTech, E-Commerce, Energy, IoT, Sport, News, Religion
+ A Minimum Viable Product (MVP) that has demonstrated demand and ready to further establish product/market fit
+ Team must contain at least two members, and has the right balance of skills/ability to build, test and deliver
+ Founder must be the lead participant and the whole team attend on full-time basis (present at the Solution Space 30+hrs/week during the 12 week program from 3 April – 30 June 2018)
+ Entrepreneurs are hungry, committed, disciplined, doers, and coachable
+ A desire to help other teams and contribute to the community as a whole

APPLICATION PROCESS:
+ Applicants submit online application by 28 February 2018.
+ The Selection Committee reviews the applications and the top 20-30 startups are selected to participate in a five-day design sprint to assess the fundamentals of the business and the team. NB! Applicants should be able to attend this bootcamp in Cape Town, South Africa between 12 – 16 March 2018. Applicants are expected to cover their own costs associated with travel, accommodation.
+ The top 10-15 startups from the bootcamp are selected to participate in the three-month Venture Incubation Programme in Cape Town, South Africa between 3 April – 30 June 2018.

Apply for AFRINIC Fellowship

The AFRINIC fellowship is for individuals representing small organisations, universities, and organisation that are actively involved in Internet operations and development or ICT policy in their countries and respective communities. The fellow is expected to positively and actively contribute to Internet number resource management awareness and policy development in the AFRINIC service region.

To qualify for the fellowship, You:

  1. Must be a resident of an African nation
  2. Don’t need to be an AFRINIC member
  3. Are involved in the Internet community.
  4. Are willing to report on how this fellowship has benefited you/your Organisation/country within an agreed time frame.

The Selection Process

The Selection Process is a set of steps used by the Fellowships Team to screen and select the fellows of an upcoming AFRINIC meeting:

  1. Applicants are ranked in order of preference by region. The number of fellowships available will vary dependent on the location of meeting, and budgetary constraints.
  2. Applicants are rated on their attendance and contributions at the local and regional levels on internet-related matters on community mailing lists and meetings. They are also expected to share on what they have learnt from their experience as a fellow.
  3. The Fellowship Team carefully evaluates all the applications then selects the applicants that are best suited for the fellowship, providing opportunities to individuals from a wide range of organisations and geographical locations within the AFRINIC service region.
  4. The Fellowship Team attempts to maintain a balance region-wise and the number of fellows selected varies according to the fellowship budget and location of each Meeting.
  5. The decisions of the Fellowship Team are final and the selected applicants are informed individually by email. A list of selected fellows is then announced on the AFRINIC’s announce list, website and conference website. (Applicants who are not selected are encouraged to apply for future AFRINIC Meeting fellowship)

What AFRINIC Offers

AFRINIC offers fellowship to delegates from across Africa to attend its Public Policy Meetings. Fellowships are funded by AFRINIC. Fellowships are offered for both annual AFRINIC stand-alone meetings and the Africa Internet Summit which is organised by AFRINIC and the other AF*.

The fellowship includes:

  1. Hotel Accommodation (Bed and Breakfast)
  2. Per Diem
  3. Full travel cost (air ticket and airport drop off from the airport to the venue)
  4. Travel insurance

Jiactivate Mtaani in Kajiado County

It is a pleasure for Violet Mbiti Foundation to collaborate with Organization of African Youth Kenya Chapter and Kenya Red Cross to organize Jiactivate Mtaani in Kajiado County at The Maasai Technical Training Institute.This was Phase 2 of Jiactivate with the focus being  how  youth can work with local leaders  to find local solutions. There were creative sessions where youth drew a graffiti of Jiactivate and awareness creation on  advocating for change for adolescents and youth sexual reproductive health.Youth from all sub counties in Kajiado County have attended including members of Violet Mbiti Foundation.

Apply to attend The Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Reduction 2018 Global Summit in Malaysia

We are happy to announce that The Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR’s) 2018 Global Summit will be taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 22nd-25th May.
GNDR’s biennial Global Summit aims to bring their members together to provide opportunities to increase collaboration and sharing of knowledge.
This year’s theme will be “Stronger Together: Connecting Communities” and will aim to:

  1. Improve understanding of the work undertaken across GNDR, the benefits of being a member and update on changes at the Secretariat
  2. Facilitate collaboration between members and (i) other members; (ii) donors, governments and the private sector; and (iii) the Secretariat
  3. Enhance accountability of GNDR’s governance structures and advisory bodies (e.g. the Global Board, Regional Advisory/Steering Groups) to members
  4. Empower members to share knowledge and experience with each other

Though GNDR is able to support some full members financially, any additional members from across the world who are able to support themselves financially are welcome to attend the Summit.

Apply to attend Global Youth Summit 2018 in Switzerland (fully-funded)

The Global Changemakers currently receive applications for the 2018 Global Youth Summit for youths making a positive impact in their respective communities, a joint collaborative program by the Mercator Foundation Switzerland and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation aim to bring together youths making a difference in their various communities.

Who is eligible?

The most inspiring, interesting, enthusiastic, determined, innovative young social entrepreneurs, community activists, volunteers and campaigners who are working towards attaining the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) across the globe. Participants should be between 18 and 23 years old at the time of the summit.

 What does the program cover?

If you are selected, your flight (from your country’s main airport), transport from Zurich to the summit, accommodation and food costs will be covered for the duration of the summit. Insurance and additional personal expenses, as well as visas to enter Switzerland (for those who require one) will not be covered.​

​How to apply

In order to apply you need to fill in an online application which includes a two-minute video describing your motivation and your efforts to bring about a positive change in your community. There is also a 35 USD application administration fee (the fee is less than 2% of the cost of bringing a participant to the summit).

It is suggested you prepare your application and video by reading  and ensuring that you have a PayPal account or credit/debit card ready to be able to pay the 35 USD application administration fee.

NB Please make sure to copy your Transaction ID, Order Number or Money Transaction Number to paste it on the online application form.

STep 2: Make and upload the 2 minute application video. 

STep 3: Fill in the online application form. 

NB You cannot save your application, so it is suggested that you prepare your written application using the application guide as a reference and copy- paste your answers directly to the form thereafter.

Jiactivate Mtaani in Makueni County

It is a pleasure for Violet Mbiti Foundation to collaborate with Organization of African Youth Kenya Chapter and Kenya Red Cross to organize Jiactivate Mtaani in Makueni County at The County Hall.This was Phase 2 of Jiactivate with the focus being  how  youth can work with local leaders  to find local solutions. There were creative sessions where youth drew a graffiti of Jiactivate and awareness creation on  advocating for change for adolescents and youth sexual reproductive health.Youth from all sub counties in Makueni County attended as well as Athi River Resource Center team from Mavoko Sub County Machakos County who are a success story of Jiactivate and have come to share with youth on how they have engaged The County Government and National Government on matters Governance.

The mission of the Swedish Institute Management Programme (SIMP) is to lead change for responsible leadership and sustainable business practices. The programme challenges traditional approaches of doing business and explores how business can become more people and planet focused in market driven economies.

As a participant in the programme you will meet prominent figures in the commercial and political sectors as well as academia who will be presenting topics such as climate change, responsible financing, stake-holder engagement and leadership development. The curriculum includes theoretical approaches, problem-solving using real business cases and interactive workshops with experienced practitioners. It also includes company visits and coaching on your own business case.

By the end of the programme you are a part of a long-lasting and active network of business leaders working for a sustainable future in Asia, Africa and Europe.

  • A global network of leaders focused on sustainble business and responsible leadership
  • Increased knowledge about environmental, social and financial aspects of sustainable business
  • Increased leadership competence
  • Insights into business cases in Sweden, one of the leading countries in sustainable business practice
  • Exchange of experience with prominent practitioners in business and in the public sector

Can I apply? 

  • You aspire to make sustainability an integral part of your business strategy
  • You are in a leading position within trade, industry or the public sector
  • You have mandate to influence the business strategy for your organisation
  • You are between 25-45 years old (born 1973 – 1993)
  • You have a good working knowledge of both written and spoken English
  • You are a citizen and resident of Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda or Zambia
  • You can take part in all parts of the programme
  • You are willing to forward competences and knowledge you gain from the programme

Programme timeline

Kick-off, 2 days in one of the selected countries in Africa, 14 – 15 June 2018 
You are introduced to the programme curriculum and topics of focus. Regional business cases creates the framework for your learning.

Module 1, 2 weeks in Sweden, 17 – 29 eptember 2018
You deep dive into how sustainble business contributes to innovation, production and increased trust in business on the global market. You explore topics such as leadership, stake-holder engagement, climate change and company visits. You also have a chance to initiate your own business case and receive coaching and peer-feedback.

Module 2, 1 week in one of the selected countries in Africa, 11 – 16 February 2019
The focus is on reconnection with the network and harvesting learnings from module 1. You have the opportunity to visit and analyse a real business case.

All parts of the programme are mandatory. The programme is intense and includes evening activities.

  • Training and content
  • Accommodation, food and domestic transport during the programme
  • Flight tickets to and from Sweden
  • Insurance covering acute illness and accident when in Sweden

Costs covered and arranged by you

  • Flight tickets to and from the kick-off and module 2
  • Visas costs, when necessary, to all programme modules
  • Occasional meals
  • Occasional airport transfers
  • Insurance when modules are held outside of Sweden

Before applying kindly note that it takes about 60 min or more to finish the application form and there is no session saving possibility. Please heave a headshot photo ready for uploading at the end of the application.

Evaluation of  Applications

The applications will be evaluated according to the following selection criteria:

  • The relevance and quality of personal motivation and commitment, and the applicant’s answers in the SIMP application form.
  • An assessment of the CV.
  • The general qualifications of the applicant.

Interviews

Shortlisted candidates will be called for interviews as a second step in the selection process.

Admission

The Swedish Institute will admit about 30 applicants to SIMP Africa.

The Swedish Institute will recruit participants based on the recommendations of the selection committee as well as the candidates’ general suitability for the programme.

As far as it is possible, the Swedish Institute will ensure that there is an even distribution of candidates from the different countries. However, it is worth noting that we are striving for as much diversity as possible in the group in order to maximise the exchange of experience between the participants. It is therefore possible that the actual distribution of candidates from each country may differ slightly.

2018 Competition!Ideas for Action courtesy of The World Bank

Ideas for Action, a joint program of the World Bank and the Zicklin Center for Business Ethics Research at the Wharton School, is a youth competition centered around financing sustainable development. Every year, students and young professionals from around the world participate to design ideas for financing and implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. Winners of the competition present their ideas during the IMF & World Bank Annual Meetings, receive support from a dedicated startup accelerator at the Wharton School, and benefit from unique networking opportunities with other young leaders as well as some of the most senior decision-makers in international development, academia, and the private sector.

Timeline —

  • Deadline for proposal submissions: February 28, 2018 at 11:59PM (PST)
  • Announcement of submissions selected for the final round*: Early April 2018
  • Announcement of winners: May 31, 2018

* Teams may be asked to amend their proposals for the final round if recommended by the jury.

Awards      —

The finalists and winners will be selected by a panel of academics and experienced development professionals from public and private sector institutions. Winners of the competition get the opportunity to:

  • Present their ideas at an event during the Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group,
  • Receive support from a project incubator at the Wharton School, and
  • Benefit from unique networking opportunities with experts from international development, academia, and the private sector.

Your Proposal     —

Your proposal should include the following:

  • Title and team name
  • Short abstract
  • Explanation of the problem and context: Briefly describe the problem that your proposal is addressing.
  • Your solution: Succinctly describe your idea (including design, target population, stakeholders, incentives, and implementation)
  • Expected impact: Why is it relevant?
  • Are there similar examples? If so, where and how?
  • Challenges: What are challenges you might face and how can they be addressed?

Registration and Submission     —

Eligibility: Students and young professionals between the ages of 18-35 years from around the world are invited participate.

Team Registration: Teams must consist of two to six members and may be formed across different schools, institutions, companies, countries, nationalities, etc. We recommend all teams to register for our listserv above to receive updates on I4A programs and events leading up to the competition deadline.
