Are you a youth driving change in your community?Register your details with Amref Health Africa and Advocacy Accelerator

Deadline:February 12, 2018

Amref Health Africa and the Advocacy Accelerator are implementing the Youth Advocacy Project, a newly funded initiative working with youth, partners and communities to strengthen the voice, skills, and participation of youth across Kenya to advocate for youth-identified policy and resource priorities in the areas of gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

Young people under the age of 35 make up 70% of the Kenyan population, yet often face huge barriers to engaging with decision-makers and making the changes they seek, especially in the areas of gender equality and SRHR.  The Youth Advocacy project will work with youth across Kenya to overcome and remove these barriers in order to take advantage of the huge opportunities that currently exist for youth to shift Kenya’s political landscape.

Amref Health Africa are looking for youth advocates who are driving change in their community.Register your details by clicking on the link below:

Call for Proposals by UN Climate Resilience Initiative and InsuResilience

Deadline: Sunday, Feb 11, 2018 at 20:00:00 PM Eastern Standard Time

Developing countries, and particularly the poorest and most vulnerable communities, are disproportionately affected by climate change. Exposure to shocks, such as floods and storms, and stresses such as droughts or changing rainfall patterns, can also affect those who are not poor but remain vulnerable. With the frequency of such events set to rise with climate change, communities’ capacity to absorb climate shocks and stresses represents a key component of climate resilience.

Climate risk insurance and social protection measures can help reduce affected populations’ vulnerability to shocks and stresses. Well-designed climate risk insurance schemes, when applied as part of broader risk management strategies, can act as a buffer for people shortly after an event occurs and protect people from falling (back) into poverty. Social protection, such as cash transfers and retraining, together with a wide range of other programmes aiming to reduce poverty and vulnerability, is increasingly recognised as a tool to help communities to adapt to climate impacts. Social protection can also improve incomes in the long term.

The UN Climate Resilience Initiative and InsuResilience are seeking innovative ideas for linking climate risk insurance with other forms of social protection to further enhance communities’ ability to absorb the impacts of climate change. The contest winner will receive seed funding to implement the proposal (worth 40,000 euros) and mentoring, training and technical assistance (worth 12,000 euros).

Judging Criteria

We are calling for proposals that outline an innovative, practical solution combining climate risk insurance with other forms of social protection to help vulnerable communities absorb climate impacts.  Proposals could take the form of new schemes, products or methodologies or build on existing approaches.

This contest seeks proposals that:

  • Are linked to a specific context;
  • Highlight how the proposed innovation will enhance the target group’s’ capacity to absorb and cope with climate impacts;
  • Address how long term feasibility and local ownership could be secured in the proposed approach.
  • Include a detailed budget with a timeframe for implementation (detailed budgets will be requested at semi-finalist stage).

Proposals can be at any stage of development:

  • Well thought-out ideas that require additional research, design or planning;
  • Comprehensive strategies or schemes that are ready for prototyping or implementation;
  • Initiatives and projects that have already achieved success and are ready to be scaled;
  • Best practices that need refinement or support in order to scale;
  • Methodologies for designing  or improving the design of strategies and schemes.

Judges will be asked to evaluate proposals on the following criteria:

  1. Feasibility: Feasibility of the actions proposed in the proposal. Judges with different kinds of expertise will evaluate the technical, economic, social, and political feasibility of the proposals.
  2. Impact: Impact and ability of the actions proposed to contribute to vulnerable communities’ ability to  absorb and cope with climate shocks and stresses. This includes the impact of the proposal in reaching a number of vulnerable people on the ground and the magnitude of the proposal’s impact on communities’ and individuals’ capacity to absorb.
  3. Novelty: Novelty of the proposal’s ideas. Innovative thinking and originality in a proposal will be valued more than encyclopedic knowledge.
  4. Presentation Quality: Proposals that are well-presented will be favored over those that aren’t. Presentation quality includes how well written a proposal is, how well it uses graphics or other visual elements, and how compelling are its artistic representations of possible future worlds (if any). Semi-finalists will also evaluated on the quality of the proposed detailed budget for the use of seed funding for implementation.

The Climate CoLab Impact Assessment Fellows can help you estimate the potential impact your proposal can have on preventing fatalities and damages, which the Judges will take into consideration when assessing your proposal.  See your proposal’s Impact tab for more details.

Judges will evaluate proposals, and deliberate as a group to select the Semi-Finalists, Finalists, Winners, and possibly other awardee(s) at their discretion.  Judgments of desirability are also made in the final stage of the contest, by the Climate CoLab community through popular vote, and by the Judges through their selection of the Judges’ Choice winner(s).

For the contest schedule and phases, please see the blue schedule bar on the contest.

Prizes

The Judges’ Choice Winner will be selected by the judging panel.  The UN Climate Resilience Initiative A2R and InsuResilience will provide the Judges’ Choice Winner with seed funding for implementation of the proposal (worth 40,000 euros) and mentoring, training and technical assistance (worth 12,000 euros) as outlined below.
Seed funding for implementation of the winning proposal (worth 40,000 euros)
The Judges’ Choice Winner will receive seed funding to support the implementation of the winning proposal. The funding will be spent according to a budget submitted by the team, to be agreed on with the contest organisers. Budgets detailing how the seed funding would be spent will be requested from semi-finalists to the contest. The terms and conditions associated with the seed funding will be set out in an agreement with the winning team.
Mentoring, training and technical assistance (worth 12,000 euros)
Mentoring, training and technical assistance will be provided to the  Judges’ Choice Winner. Suitable mentors will be identified to support the implementation of the winning proposal, with online and face-to-face mentoring provided on a monthly basis for the duration of three months. In addition, a training and technical assistance plan will be developed with the winning team, with the support of the mentors identified. The form of support will be determined depending on the team’s needs but could include a relevant training course or a field study on a relevant topic.  The details will be set out in an agreement with the winning team.
The Judges’ Choice Winner will also receive wide recognition and visibility by MIT Climate CoLab.

The Popular Vote Winner will be chosen by popular vote, at the semi-finalist stage of the contest. The Popular Vote Winner will win an expenses-paid trip (including flight, accommodation, and meals to attend the InsuResilience Global Partnership Forum in 2018 during COP24, where the winner will be given the opportunity to present the proposal to a community of practitioners, policymakers and private sector representatives.

[Register] 2nd AYM Retreat & Youth Empowerment Forum 2018, Accra – GHANA

Deadline for Registration: 20th Feb 2018.

Afrika Youth Movement (AYM) afrikayouthmovement.org is a pan-African, action-oriented, youth-led movement that strives for the participation, development and leadership of African youth to transform Africa and achieve their rights to peace, equality and social justice. AYM has become a strong political youth voice in Africa’s debate on youth and development. We are now a global African community of more than 10,000 organizations, youth activists, scholars, citizens and survivors from more than 40 countries.

a.JPG

Last year, we established a groundbreaking model of youth forums that started in Nairobi, Kenya on 20 March 2017 and brought together 80 youth leaders of grassroots initiatives from 20 countries. Please read Forum report here https://goo.gl/Pcp15f. Following the forum, our members launched hubs in Ghana and Democratic Republic of Congo and replicated the forum model in Nigeria and Uganda and spent 2017 spreading our vision of pan-Africanism, campaigning and standing in solidarity with our members in Togo, Cameroon and Libya. Read more about our members actions on 2017 newsletter https://goo.gl/dn2NbU

This year, we are organizing our 2nd Youth Empowerment Forum on the International Mother Earth Day, in Accra, Ghana, on 22nd April, 2018. We aim to host the event at the University of Ghana, gathering +100 participants and giving them a platform to question, brainstorm and critically address global agenda from the lens of Africa’s agenda; most importantly examine the role of the youth in creating the Africa We Want and engage with different stakeholders. African youth have an important role to play in pushing governments to formulate comprehensive policies and incorporate the agenda into national development strategies. The mantra of “Leave No One Behind” means the inclusion of all especially the poorest and most marginalized, youth, women and children. Following up on last year forum, we will focus on the agreed intersection of the two agendas; (1) Governance and Leadership (2) Peace and Justice (3) Employment (4) Education (5) Health (6) Agriculture (7) Youth and Women Empowerment.

Prior to the forum, we will convene for AYM’s 2018 Retreat reflecting on the impact of AYM on African Youth and evaluating our engagements with United Nations, African Union and Country Hubs. The Retreat will take place 18 – 21 April, 2018 . AYM retreat will be 4 days strategic and evaluation meeting, gathering 40 AYM members (old and new) to strategize and co-create ways to strengthen our continental youth led movement (limited spaces).

NOTE: AYM does NOT provide funds to cover the travels and accommodation for participants but you can request a sponsorship letter to fundraise for your participation.

For Participants based in Ghana, 10 USD participation fees will be applied and $30 for other African delegates.

Apply to attend The East African Youth Summit 2018 in Kigali,Rwanda

The 2018 East African Regional Youth Summit is one of the initiatives aiming at contributing youth inclusiveness, understanding and full participation in the EAC related matters. This is a scaling up effort as similar conferences have been held in Kenya and Uganda [in 2014 and 2015 respectively] under agenda of Climate Change and 400 youth participated. The conference motto was; “we speak to be heard, we act to demonstrate and we start to be followed-EAC let’s go green”.

The main goal of 2018 East African Youth Summit is to offer a platform to the East African youth to engage and enlighten themselves with vast understanding on EAC related matters and enhance their fully participation and therefore tap the opportunities availed by EAC integration process.

KIGALI

The 2018 East African Regional Youth Summit aims at bringing 400 youth across East African countries to Kigali, Rwanda for four days summit in April, 2018. The contribution of this summit is to tackling current global and East Africa region challenges such as SDG’s, migration, unemployment, the rise of violent extremism, youth participation and engagement, innovation and technology, elections to list a few. The following tentative topics are expected to be presented and discussed;
1) The unemployment among the EAC youth and the future ahead
2) Peace and security threats and the role of youth in East African region
3) Technology and innovation-the hopes of the East African youth
4) The young women and the gender equality space across East Africa region
5) The role and contribution of youth in the governance of East African governments

East African Regional Youth Summit theme; “Youth and East Africanzation Bretix lessons for deeper integration”

Whilst the aftershock of the Brexit is still rumbling in Europe, it is important for Youth in the East African Community to reflect critically on the same as they contemplate the future of the EAC. It is meaningful for youth in East Africa to unearth the crucial lessons from the Brexit and be able to contribute to policy discussions inherent in the EAC regional integration processes.

To find, discover and choose these is to find true joy in life:
“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.”

Announcing: Call for proposals – Successful Collaboration Across Sectors for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health

The deadline for proposals to be submitted has been extended to 21 January 2018. No applications will be accepted after this date.

Are you part of an inspirational collaboration across sectors and that has resulted in solutions and achieved success for women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health?

PMNCH has launched a global call for proposals to find out what countries are experiencing as they collaborate across sectors? What innovative practices are emerging which enable this collaboration? What are the impacts? What can we learn? We seek proposals to develop case studies from low-, middle-, and high-income countries that will provide inspiration, insight, and ideas into what worked and why, as well as the challenges addressed, in collaborating across sectors. To be eligible the collaboration must also address at least one of the six EWEC priority themes:

  • Early Childhood Development
  • Adolescent Health and Well-Being
  • Quality, Equity and Dignity in Services
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights
  • Empowerment of Women, Girls and Communities
  • Be undertaken in Humanitarian and Fragile Settings with women, children and/or adolescents as a target population

Twelve inspiring examples of collaborations across sectors designed to improve women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health will be selected for development as a case study. They will also be included as a special issue of a leading global health journal, and launched at the 2018 Partners’ Forum, an important advocacy moment in the EWEC calendar. The case studies will be widely profiled, promoted and disseminated through traditional and digital media channels.

Call for Proposals: Critical/Feminist African Development Project

We invite proposals for a new project on development policies and initiatives of governments and policy institutions across Africa in the immediate post-independence period. The project, Post-Colonialisms Today, will apply feminist and heterodox approaches to economics to recover the key policies that sought to address the material, cultural, and spiritual limitations imposed by colonial regimes, and identify ideas that can be usefully adapted to on-going development challenges in Africa.

We welcome proposals from African scholars and activist intellectuals to join this project. Up to USD 5000 will be offered to support the fulfillment of each accepted proposal. In addition to considerations of merit and relevance, proposals must show a feminist as well as heterodox approach to analysis of social and economic development. For more info, please visit the project site (https://postcolonialisms.regionsrefocus.org/), or see the full Call for Proposals and concept note.

Proposal abstracts of approximately 500 words must be sent no later than 26 January 2018 to: postcolonialismstoday@regionsrefocus.org. Please include your full name, affiliation, and contact information. Selected proposals will be announced in February 2018.

Apply Online Now: Opportunity for TWO Young People to Join the FP 2020 Reference Group 2018

Calling All Young Family Planning Champions:

FP2020 Now Accepting Applications for

Reference Group Youth Members

Application deadline: January 22, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. EST/2 p.m. GMT

unnamed.jpg

The fundamental right of individuals (including young people) to decide, freely and for themselves, whether, when, and how many children to have is central to the vision and goals of FP2020.

Yet today, many of the more than one billion young people (ages 10-24) living in the 69 FP2020 focus countries do not have access to high-quality sexual and reproductive health care programs that meet their needs and empower them to determine matters related to their sexuality for themselves. Unfortunately, many young people are prevented from accessing and using modern forms of contraception due to discrimination, stigma, and a lack of information.

FP2020 is seeking applicants interested in a leadership role in the movement to provide insights and expertise to address these challenges and to strengthen young people’s voice and participation within the partnership. Successful candidates will be family planning champions in their country and well-connected to national, regional and/or global networks committed to ensuring the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people and adolescents.

Please see below for more information. Click here to apply.

About FP2020 Reference Group

FP2020 is governed by the Reference Group, which sets the overall strategic direction and drives coordination among the partnership’s stakeholders. Reference Group members are drawn from governments, multilateral organizations, civil society, donor agencies, and the private sector, and are accountable for ensuring that 120 million more women and girls have access to voluntary family planning information, services and contraceptives by the year 2020. Serving as a Reference Group member offers a unique opportunity for meaningful participation for young people at the highest level of FP2020’s governance.

More information about adolescents, youth and family planning can be found here.

Position Description

Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) is accepting applications for two young people to join our Reference Group, which provides leadership and oversight across the FP2020 partnership’s efforts and currently comprises 23 members representing multi-lateral organizations, civil society, governments, and the private sector.

The Youth Representative Seat on the FP2020 Reference Group is intended to incorporate the perspectives of young people and provide an opportunity for meaningful participation at the highest levels of FP2020’s governance. The two individuals selected through this process will participate in all Reference Group activities and share the seat during in-person meetings.

The Youth Reference Group Members will serve as a critical link between FP2020 and networks of adolescents and young people in the family planning community. Successful candidates will have the ability to articulate insights that reflect a strong understanding of issues, concerns, and opportunities that are unique to young people and adolescents.

Eligibility Criteria

The Youth Representatives on the Reference Group must be filled by individuals who:

  • Are a member of at least one youth network engaged in work to advance the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people, specifically related to ensuring the right to contraceptives;
  • Born after January 1, 1990 (in the year 2020 you must be 30 or younger);
  • Are able to serve for a two-year period;
  • Are available to participate in two annual Reference Group meetings each year and an additional 1-2 global convenings each year (approximately 3 weeks of travel per year);
  • Are from one of FP2020’s focus countries.

Qualities

To successfully serve on the Reference Group, applicants should demonstrate the following qualities and capabilities:

  • Proven advocate for family planning both in their own country and globally;
  • Well-versed in sexual and reproductive health and rights issues, especially those related to young people and family planning;
  • Well-connected to youth networks and organizations in their own country and globally;
  • Comfortable voicing their perspective and the perspective of other young people amongst high-level leaders in the family planning community;
  • Prepared to present ideas and solutions to the major challenges impacting adolescent and youth access and use of contraception.
